Victorian Silver Teapot, Mappin & Webb, 1898
Here we have a fine quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Bachelor Teapot. The teapot is bowl shaped and stands on three pad feet. The top of the spout has acanthus leaf decoration and the top rim of the body is scalloped. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teapot was made in London by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1898. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good with just one little ding on the body near the spout plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The teapot measures 19.5cm / 7.7ins from spout to handle, 10.5cm / 4.1ins across the body and stands 14cm / 5.5ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 310g / 10.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter c for 1898 and the Mn & Wb in a shield makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the teapot.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
