Victorian Silver Table Forks x 6, Exeter, 1866
This is a very high quality set of 6 Victorian Sterling Silver Table Forks in the ever-popular Fiddle pattern. The forks are made in a heavy gauge of silver by silversmiths James & Josiah Williams and assayed in Exeter in 1866. Exeter has a history of assaying silver going back to the 16th century but its assay office was formally established by Act Of Parliament in 1701. It was the office of choice for most silver and goldsmiths in the South West of England up until its closure in 1883 and Exeter pieces are much sought after by collectors. James & Josiah Williams were based in Bristol, which didn't have an assay office and used the Exeter office up until its closure. The firm, which later became Josiah Williams & Co, were the largest silversmiths outside of London, Birmingham & Sheffield and operated from around 1818 up to 1940.
The undersides of the Table Fork stems are elegantly engraved with the initial D. The hallmarks, also on the underside of the stem, are well struck and very clear to read. The forks are in good overall condition with only minimal wear and tear, certainly no more than you would expect of items that have seen over 150 years of use! Please make sure to view all the photos.
The forks are each 21cm long and together weigh in at a very substantial 412g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter "K" for 1866, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JW & JW makers' mark for James & Josiah Williams.
