Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Martin & Hall, 1865
This is a high quality pair of large Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs. The Sugar Tongs have a very decorative shell and swag design with feathered edging on each arm, whilst the hinge has thread edging and a crest of a heraldic beast and coronet. They are in a good heavy gauge of silver and were made in Sheffield by noted silversmiths Martin, Hall & Co in 1865. Martin, Hall & Co date back in origin to around 1820 and were an important and well-known firm participating in many international exhibitions including the Great Exhibition in 1851. They finally ceased trading in the late 1930s. The hallmarks, on the inside of the arm, are well struck and clear to read. There is also a registered design diamond lozenge on one arm but the detail on this is largely rubbed away.
The tongs are in good condition with just one very small ding on the hinge. Otherwise they have only the minimal amount of wear you would expect from an item of this age (over 150 years!) and purpose. They are perfectly usable today or would make a great addition to a collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.
This is a large pair of tongs, measuring 15.3cm long and weighing a very substantial 59.5g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "X" for 1865, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the RM over EH makers' mark for Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall of Martin, Hall & Co.
