Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Hayne & Cater, 1854
This is a top quality heavyweight pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Fiddle pattern. The tongs are made by silversmiths Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater in London and date to 1854. Unusually for this period they have no initials or personalisation of any kind.
Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater set up their partnership in London around 1835. They produced a range of well made silver tableware and particularly flatware over the next 30 years before closing in 1865.
These sugar tongs are in very good condition. They have no dings or dents and only the most superficial surface wear. They have clearly been well looked after for the last 166 years! They are made in a heavy gauge of silver and feel pleasantly chunky in the hand. The tongs are entirely suitable for use today, either for sugar or ice cubes, or would make a great addition to any collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 14.5cm long and weigh a very substantial 61.3g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the arms are well struck and clear to read. On one arm they are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the gothic date letter "T" for 1854 and the Queen Victoria duty mark. On the other arm is the S.H over D.C makers' mark for Samuel Hayne & Dudley Cater.
Shipping in the UK is £4.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
