Victorian Silver Sugar Tongs, Brewis & Co, 1890
This is a smart pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the classic Old English pattern with feathered edges. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The tongs were made in London by Brewis & Co and date to 1890. Founded by William Henry Brewis in 1890, the firm was sold just a year later to Thomas K. Bowley who continued to run it as Brewis & Co into the early 1900s. This makes the WHB makers' mark, which was only in use for one year, quite a rare one to find.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sugar tongs are 11.4cm / 4.5ins long and weigh in at a respectable 31.0g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the insides of the arms, are nice and clear to read. On one arm is the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London and the date letter P for 1890. On the other arm is the rare WHB makers' mark for William Henry Brewis of Brewis & Co.
