Victorian Silver Sauce Ladle, J&A Savory, 1853
This is a top quality heavyweight Victorian Sterling Silver Sauce Ladle in the fiddle, thread & shell pattern. The ladle is made in London by Joseph & Albert Savory and dates to 1853. There were a number of members of the Savory family working as silversmiths and spoon makers in the City of London in the Victorian era. Joseph & Albert were brothers who formed their partnership around 1834 and worked together until the mid-1850s. Their work is of consistently high quality.
This sauce ladle is double struck in the fiddle, thread & shell pattern with the diamond heel variant. First introduced around 1810, this pattern has enjoyed enduring popularity and is still made today. There is an English Gothic style letter "J" engraved at the top of the stem. The ladle is a very well made piece in a good heavy gauge of silver.
Overall condition is good with no dings or dents and just the surface wear you would expect after nearly 170 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The ladle is 17.8cm / 7" long and weighs a very substantial 84.5g / 2.98oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are partly struck into the thread pattern but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "S" for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JS over AS makers' mark for Joseph & Albert Savory.
