Victorian Silver Pepper Shaker, S Blanckensee 1886
This is a charming Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker has a bulbous lower body with reeded decoration standing on three ball feet. The upper part of the body is hourglass shaped and capped by a domed shaker top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The pepper shaker was made in Birmingham by silversmiths S. Blanckensee & Son and dates to 1886. The firm was originally founded in Bristol by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee in 1826 but very quickly moved to premises in Birmingham. Saul Samuel was briefly a partner but left in 1858 and from the 1880s they were known as S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd until they ceased trading in the late 1930s. They made a wide range of silverware of consistently high quality.
Condition is very good, with just two truly tiny dings at the top of the neck plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 135 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pepper shaker stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high and is 3cm / 1.2ins in diameter. It weighs in at 18.8g / 0.66oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper part of the body, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter m for 1886, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the S B & S makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
