Victorian Silver Letter Clip, Stuart Clifford 1896
Here we have a rare, superb quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Letter Clip. The clip is roughly oval in shape and the top is decorated with an exquisite embossed design featuring Hermes (Greek) or Mercury (Roman), the messenger of the gods, an ideal subject to look after your correspondence. The base has a crimped rim.
The letter clip was made in London by renowned silversmith Stuart Clifford and dates to 1896. Stuart Clifford established his firm in London’s Grosvenor Square in 1885, becoming Stuart Clifford & Co in 1904. He made high end decorative items for the discerning gentleman customer, primarily for use on a desk, at the dining table or smoking related. The company remained in business up until around the start of the First World War.
Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or splits and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The letter clip is 7.5cm / 2.95ins by 5.2cm / 2ins and stands 2.2cm / 0.87ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 68.5g / 2.4oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the base are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1896 and the S C makers' mark for Stuart Clifford. The top also has a partial set of hallmarks showing the lion passant, the leopard's head and the S C makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the letter clip.
