Victorian Silver Double Sovereign Case, B'ham 1896
This is a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Double Sovereign Case. The case is oblong with rounded corners and opens to reveal two spring loaded coin holders with engine turned tops. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The sovereign case was made in Birmingham by Henry Williamson Ltd and dates to 1896. Henry Williamson opened his first premises in London's Farringdon Street in 1879. The firm expanded to became Henry Williamson Ltd in 1894, opened a manufacturing premises in Spencer Street, Birmingham and also commissioned pieces from Sheffield to run alongside the London showroom. They specialised in small silverware items for the dining table, the dressing table or for personal use. The company finally ceased trading in the late 1920s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of use. The hinge is rather tight, which means that the lid won't sit wide open and would need to be held whilst coins are inserted or removed. The catch is also a little stiff but still fully functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The case is 5.3cm / 2.1ins long, 4.1cm / 1.6ins wide and 1.5cm / 0.59ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 35.2g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are nice and clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' mark. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter w for 1896 and the H.W.Ld makers' mark for Henry Williamson Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
