Victorian Silver Decanter Label, Chester, 1898
This is a smart late Victorian Sterling Silver Decanter Label for Whisky. The decanter label is oblong with a gadrooned rim and the word WHISKY neatly engraved across the front. It is suspended by a chain from the top corners.
The decanter label was made by silversmiths Stokes & Ireland Ltd and assayed in Chester in 1898. The firm was established in Birmingham by William Henry Stokes & Arthur George Ireland in 1891 and operated from premises in Great Hampton Street in the famous Jewellery Quarter. Although Birmingham based, the majority of their pieces were assayed in Chester with only a few marked in their home town of Birmingham. They produced a very broad range of consistently good quality silverware and remained in business until the late 1930s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The decanter label is 5.1cm / 2ins across and 10.1cm / 3.98ins from the top of the chain to the bottom of the label. It weighs in at 14.8g / 0.52oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the back of the label, are just a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter P for 1898 and the S.I.Ld makers' mark for Stokes & Ireland Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £5 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
