Victorian Silver Cream Jug, H,A & S, London, 1889

This ia a good quality Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug in the Georgian Revival style. The jug has a round stepped base, wrythen decoration around the lower part of the body, a scroll handle with chevrom decoration on the top and a scalloped rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cream jug is made in London by the renowned silversmiths Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates to 1889. The firm was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland and Thomas Frercks, who left the partnership in 1841. Henry Holland then continued by himself before being joined by his son, Henry Jnr in 1851. After Henry Snr’s retirement in 1883, John Aldwinckle and James Slater joined as partners to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. The firm continued to be manged by various members of these three families until the firm was bought out by Francis Higgins in 1922.
Condition is very good, with just a few truly tiny dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 9cm / 3.5ins from lip to handle, 5.7cm / 2.2ins across and stands 10.5cm / 4.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 92.0g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the body near the handle, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter O for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J A over T S makers' mark for John Aldwinckle and Thomas Slater who were running Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater at this point in time.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
