Victorian Silver Cream Jug & Sugar Bowl, 1889
Here we have a superb quality Victorian Sterling Silver Cream Jug and Sugar Bowl with Gilt Interiors. Each piece has eight lobed sides and stands on ornate bracket feet designed as mythical serpents. The lower parts of the bases are reeded whilst the lobed parts are decorated with alternating panels featuring a Green Man motif, fruits and celtic twists. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
This stunning set was made in London by celebrated silversmiths Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater and dates to 1889. The firm was founded in 1838 by Henry Holland and Thomas Frercks, who left the partnership in 1841. Henry Holland then continued by himself before being joined by his son, Henry Jnr in 1851. After Henry Snr’s retirement in 1883, John Aldwinckle and James Slater joined as partners to form Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater. The firm continued to be managed by various members of these three families until the firm was bought out by Francis Higgins in 1922.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug is 9cm / 3.5ins from lip to handle, 6.7cm / 2.6ins across the top rim and stands 7cm / 2.7ins high. The sugar bowl is 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter and stands 4cm / 1.6ins high. The two pieces together weigh in at a very substantial 190.1g / 6.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter O for 1889, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J A over T S makers' mark for John Aldwinckle and Thomas Slater of Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the set.
