Victorian Silver Cigarette Case, Chester, 1898
This is a beautiful late Victorian Sterling Silver Cigarette Case of the finest quality. The case is roughly square with exquisite all over chased decoration of flowers and scrolling foliage. The letters ALM are elegantly engraved in the central cartouche on the front. The inside of the case is gilded.
The cigarette case is made by silversmiths Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co of London and assayed in Chester in 1898. The firm of Richard Attenborough & Co was both a retailer and manufacturer in London's famous Oxford Street with a history dating back to 1796. The firm was bought by fellow silversmith James Charles Jay in 1887 and renamed Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co. They remained in business until the late 1950s or early 1960s.
Condition is very good with just a very shallow bruise in the front of the case, which is almost invisible within the decoration. There is some minor wear to the gilt interior as you would expect after over 120 years of good service and the elastic holding band has been knotted at some point in its life. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cigarette case is 8.7cm / 3.4ins by 7.8cm / 3.1ins and 1.5cm / 0.6ins deep. It weighs in at a substantial 110g / 3.9oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the inside of the case are well struck and clear to read. There is a full set on one side showing the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter P for 1898 and the J.J makers' mark for James Jay of Jay, Richard Attenborough & Co. There is a partial set on the other side showing the lion passant, the date letter P and the J.J makers' mark.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cigarette case.
