Victorian Silver Christening Spoon, London, 1887 Victorian Christening Spoon
This is a top quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Christening Spoon, double struck in the Fiddle, Thread & Shell pattern. The Christening Spoon is made in London in a very heavy gauge of silver by silversmiths John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater and dates to 1887. The firm of Aldwinckle & Slater (originally Holland, Aldwinckle & Slater) was in business from around 1840 up until the end of the 19th century and featured various family members over that period. They produced consistently high quality pieces and are particularly well known for their flatware.

There is a lovely inscription engraved at the top of the stem, which reads "J.E.F.H. from her godmother E. Luke 1888." The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and crisp and clear to read.

The Christening Spoon is in very good condition with no dings or dents and barely any wear & tear. Indeed it appears to have had little or no use over the last 133 years and has presumably been kept as a treasured item. It would make any interesting addition to any collection. Please make sure you look at all the photos.

The spoon is 18cm long and weighs a very substantial 65.2g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter "M" for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the JA over TS makers' mark for John Aldwinckle & Thomas Slater.
