Victorian Silver Christening Mug, Birmingham, 1894
Here we have a beautiful late Victorian Sterling Silver Christening Mug. The body of the mug is hand engraved all the way round with a design of butterflies and flowers surrounding a blank central cartouche. This would make a perfect and unique christening or new baby gift today.
The mug was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1894. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.
Condition is extremely good, with just a couple of tiny dings in the base of the mug and very little by way of superficial surface wear. This has clearly been treasured over the last 130 years and seen virtually no use at all. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mug is 9cm / 3.5ins from rim to handle, 6cm / 2.3ins in diameter and stands 9.3cm / 3.6ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 122.1g / 4.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are nice and clear to read, with just a little of the makers' mark polished away but still identifiable. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter u for 1894 and the distinctive G.N over R.H in a shield makers' mark for George Nathan and Ridley Hayes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Deliverty, which includes cover for the value of the mug.
