Victorian Silver Box, William Comyns & Sons, 1887
Here we have a very fine quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Box with a lift off domed lid. The body and the lid have embossed wrythen decoration and crimped rims. There is a blank oval cartouche in the centre of the lid.
The box would look equally at home on a desk or a dressing table or could be used for storing sewing bits and pieces or other craft accessories.
The box was made in London by celebrated silversmiths William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1887. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.
Condition is very good with just one truly tiny ding in the cartouche and a very small split in the skirt of the lid plus the superficial surface wear that you have to expect after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box 14.2cm / 5.6ins long by 6.8cm / 2.7ins wide and stands 3.3cm / 1.3ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 185g / 6.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.
Both the lid and the body have full sets of hallmarks which are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the box.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
