Victorian Silver 3 Piece Christening Set, 1871 Victorian Silver Christening %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a quite stunning Victorian Sterling Silver 3 Piece Christening Set consisting of a knife, fork and spoon with extravagant scroll decoration to both front and back of all three pieces.

The items are touchingly and elegantly engraved with P.K.S From Her Godfather A.B.T 1872. These are top quality items and would have been a very expensive Christening gift at the time they were given.

The set is made by the firm of Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1871, with the spoon and fork being assayed in London and the knife in Sheffield. The firm traced its origin back to 1820, becoming Martin, Hall & Co in 1854 when Richard Martin & Ebenezer Hall became the partners. They supplied many high end jewellers and goldsmiths shops around the country, finally going out of business in the economic struggle of the 1930s.

Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents and only the bare minimum of superficial surface wear. It seems likely that the set has had little or no use and been kept as a treasured gift and heirloom. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The knife is 19.5cm / 7.7ins long, the fork is 16.7cm / 6.6ins long and the spoon is 16.5cm / 6.5ins long. The set of three together weighs in at 112.5g / 3.9oz.

The hallmarks on the three pieces are nice and clear to read. The spoon and fork show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter q for 1871, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the RM over EH makers' mark for Martin, Hall & Co. The knife blade and the ferrule or collar are both hallmarked with the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter D for 1871, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the RM over EH makers' mark for Martin, Hall & Co.
