Victorian Glass & Silver Glue Pot, J Grinsell 1895

This is a handsome Late Victorian Glass and Sterling Silver Glue Pot. The glass pot is pear shaped with an ornate star cut base. The silver lid is circular with the glue brush inset into the handle. The interior of the lid is gilded. A monogram of the letters M L B is engraved on the top of the lid.
The glue pot was made in London by John Grinsell & Sons and dates to 1895. It was retailed by Macmichael's of South Audley Street in London's Mayfair district. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis. Machmichael's were high end retailers through the Victorian era.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that would expect after over 130 years of good service. The brush is also in very good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The glue pot stands 8.1cm / 3.2ins high and is 6cm / 2.3ins in diameter. It weighs in at 147.3g / 5.2oz.
The hallmarks, on the outside rim of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter U for 1895 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons. It also has the retail stamp Macmichael, S Audley St, W.
