Victorian Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid, 1862
This is a very smart Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot is oblong with a star cut base, whilst the silver lid has beautiful chased decoration of swirling scrolls and a central cartouche with the initials E M elegantly engraved inside it.
The pot is made in London by silversmith Thomas Whitehouse and dates to 1862. Thomas Whitehouse registered his mark in 1850 and was classed as a smallworker, literally meaning that he made a variety of small silver items. His mark is not often seen and he seems to have disappeared from the records in the 1860s.
Condition is very good with no chips or cracks in the glass and no dents in the silver, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 160 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot measures 9.3cm / 3.6ins by 4.9cm / 1.9ins and stands 3.6cm / 1.4ins high. The silver lid by itself weighs 32.8g / 1.1oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 182.0g / 6.4oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1862, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the T W makers' mark for Thomas Whitehouse.
