Victorian Dressing Table Pot with Silver Lid, 1842
This is a very stylish early Victorian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The round glass pot is slice cut all the way round the body with star cut decoration on the underside of the base. The silver lid has ornate scroll decoration surrounding a central cartouche which features a crest of a phoenix rising from the flames.
The lid is fully hallmarked and shows that it was made in London in 1842, most probably by John Jones, a silversmith who was active from the mid-1820s onwards.
Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, although there is a certain amount of scratching to the inside, which suggests that it has possibly been used to store antique jewellery or pins in the past. The silver lid is in good condition with just one small scratch & the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot is 7.5cm / 2.9ins in diameter and stands 3.2cm / 1.2ins high. The lid by itself weighs a very respectable 33.7g / 1.2oz of solid Sterling Silver, whilst the glass pot and lid together weigh in at 169.6g / 5.9oz.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are a little rubbed but still possible to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter G for 1842, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the I J makers' mark for John Jones.
