Victorian Cased Silver Pounce Pot
Victorian
Cased Silver Pounce Pot
Birmingham 1884
Maker: George Unite & Sons, Caroline Street, Birmingham.
The pounce pot is a little container of grit (or "pounce"), usually crushed cuttlefish bone, pumice, or sandstone, that was used to prepare paper centuries ago to make it smoother and easier to write on. The pounce also absorbed excess ink to help speed up drying.
The case has some scuff marks but it is sound with the hinge and catch in working order. The inside is also good although the side which holds the pot is grubby.
The pot is in really good condition with only a few surface marks associated with normal use and age.
Really unusual to find a pounce pot in its original case and from a highly thought of maker.
Free P&P in UK. All our items include postage and packaging in the UK.
Buyers outside the UK need to email us for postage costs before buying. Overseas buyers need to check that the item they intend buying can be imported into their country and will be responsible for paying any customs and/or tax charges.
