Very Rare Original Queen Anne Antique Hatchment
Very Rare Original Queen Anne Antique Hatchment.
An impressive early 18th century hatchment/armorial panel.
Very well executed painting on pine boards, with a gilt inslip and a pine moulded frame.
A super example of an early antique hatchment, featuring fabulous colours.
In very good condition.
Dated 1703, from the Queen Anne period.
Now available to view in our new, large antiques showroom in Clitheroe, Lancashire.
A hatchment or funeral escutcheon was a display of a lifetime achievement. Featuring arms, including the shield, helmet, crest, supporters and any other honours as appropriate, displayed on a black frame. Usually hung on the wall of a deceased person's house for six to twelve months. Then it would be moved to the parish church. The practice began in the 17th century from the custom of carrying an heraldic shield before the coffin of the deceased, then leaving it for display in the church. Dimensions133cm high x 110cm wide.
