Superb large 19thc bronze 'Le Genie du Travail'
Superb quality large 19th century French bronze 'Le Genie du Travail' by Emile Picault (1833-1915) with fine patination supported on a mahogany pedestal.
This superb and imposing bronze 'Le Genie du Travail' translates as 'The Genius of Labour/Work' and depicts an excellently sculptured winged male figure standing on and amongst various tools including an anvil, blacksmiths tongs, saw blade and geometric symbols.
The bronze also has an inscription to the front as follows: 'Sur le champ su labeur la victoire est feconde' with cast signature 'E Picault' and the 'Susse Freres Editeurs Paris' foundry mark.
The bronze is supported on a superbly constructed mahogany pedestal consisting of a mahogany top with sycamore stringing. The front consists of a solid curl mahogany panel with two solid uprights, the sides and back also veneered in mahogany with a chevron design leading down to a moulded curl mahogany plinth.
The French sculptor, Emile Louis Picault was particularly known for creating sculptures that depicted patriotic or allegorical subjects and produced many excellent quality figures.
Another example of this bronze can be found in The Musee d'Orsay in Paris, France.
The Susse Freres foundry was founded by two brothers, Michel and Amedee Susse, they began casting bronzes in 1839 and a few years later obtained permission to use the Sauvage procedure of reduction, this was similar to the Collas reductions produced in the Barbedienne foundry. They worked with various French sculptors including Picault, Duret and Moigniez.
This bronze is in excellent condition, is of superb quality and can go straight into a home, this price includes the mahogany pedestal.
