Silver Pounce Pot William Bateman II 1834
This attractive little 'Pounce Pot' was made by William Bateman II (great grandson of Hester Bateman). It has a clear hallmark on the base for London 1834, which is repeated on the edge of the lid. It is gilded on the inside of both the lid and the body of the pot. The facetted sided pot stands solidly on a flared foot with scalloped edge. It is 8cm high. Overall it is in good condition. 'Pounce' was a fine powder often made from ground cuttlefish bone and used to dry ink or smooth the surface of hand made paper before blotting paper was developed.
