Silver Plate Matchbox Holder, Mappin & Webb c.1899

This is a smart late Victorian Silver Plate Matchbox Holder and Stand. The oblong matchbox holder is on a short pedestal stem that rises from the centre of a broad shallow dish with a scalloped rim. One side of the matchbox holder is engraved with a letter R below a crown, suggesting that this was perhaps originally in a hotel or members' club, which would make sense for a holder of this type.
The matchbox holder was made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb as part of their high end Prince's Plate range and dates to around 1899/1900. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The Mappin & Webb brand name remains a byword for quality and style to this day.
Condition is good, with just a couple of truly tiny dings on the back of the holder, no significant plate loss and only the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The holder and stand is 12.3cm / 4.8ins high and 8.3cm / 3.2ins across the base. The matchbox holder itself is 6cm / 2.3ins high by 4.2cm / 1.6ins wide by 2.1cm / 0.82ins deep. It weighs 225.4g / 7.9oz.
The underside of the base is clearly marked with Mappin & Webb's Prince's Plate, Triple Deposit, London & Sheffield and the Gothic date letter y, which gives us a date around 1899/1900.
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail Tracked 24.
