Silver Cigarette Box, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co

Here we have a superb quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Cigarette Box. The lid of the box has engine turned decoration, whilst the interior has a cedar wood lining and a gold washed underside to the lid. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The cigarette box was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and dates to 1908. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with their Regent Street neighbours Garrard & Co.
Overall condition is good but there are dents to the two back corners of the lid. The cedar wood lining is in very good condition and still has its original divider. The lid fits tightly to keep the cigarettes as fresh as possible. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 10.8cm / 4.25ins by 9cm / 3.5ins and stands 4.5cm / 1.8ins high. It id made in a heavy grade of silver and weighs in at a very substantial 463.6g / 16.35oz but this total does of course include the cedar wood liner.
The hallmarks, on the top inside rim of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter n for 1908 and the distinctive trefoil G & S Co Ltd makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. There is a secondary partial set on the inside of the lid and the underside is stamped with the retail mark of Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co, 112 Regent Street. W.
