Silver Cased Lace Needle, Francis Webb, 1919 Lacemaking Needle Case %%alt5%%
This is a George V Sterling Silver Cased No.5 Lace Needle from just after the First World War. The needle is made by Francis Webb in Birmingham and dates to 1919. Francis Webb was a Birmingham silversmith who specialised in small personal items such as needle cases, pencil holders, letter openers, cigarette holders, thimbles and tooth picks. His firm was in business between 1887 and the early 1930s.

The lace needle, marked with the number 5, is in steel and set into a Sterling Silver base, which in turn fits neatly into the Sterling Silver case / handle. The case is beautifully embellished with chased scrollwork decoration and has a blank cartouche in which a set of initials could be engraved. It is perfectly usable today, would make a luxurious gift for any keen sewer or lacemaker or be a nice addition to a collection.

Condition is generally good, although it has clearly seen some use. There is one tiny split where the cap at the end of the case joins the tube body but it remains securely attached. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Closed up, the needle case is 8.2cm / 3.25" long. In sewing mode it is 13.7cm / 5.4" long. It weighs 7.9g / 0.28oz, including the steel needle.

The hallmarks on the side of the case are a little rubbed, as you would expect on a handheld implement but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "u" for 1919 and the F.W makers' mark for Francis Webb.
