Silver box Samuel Pemberton 1796 + 4 counters
An interesting combination of an 18thc silver box and four mid 19thc gaming counters possibly brought together a a commemorative piece. The silver box is by Samuel Pemberton. It is 2.6cm in diameter and bears a clear assay mark for Birmingham 1796. The lid is decorated with pricking and wriggle work surrounding a central foliate design. The lid fits snugly to the base, which also bears the makers mark. Scratched on the base is 'BIJ' over 'D.D' with the date 'Nov 19 1863'. The box is in good condition.
The four counters are tortoiseshell with inlaid pique work in rose gold metal, depicting the Ace, 2, 3, and 4 of diamonds. This type of counter was commonly used in the 18th/19th century, when the game of whist was very popular. All four are in excellent condition.
