Silver and Citrine Bookmark. Birmingham. 1882.

Sculptural solid silver bookmark, set with a facetted citrine which glows and glitters. The thistle design of the bookmark reflects the high Victorian vogue for all things Scottish.
Citrines were extremely popular in Victorian Scottish antique jewellery and are also referred to in Scotland as 'Cairngorm Stone' denoting their origin in the Cairngorm Mountains. This citrine is indeed Scottish and has NOT been colour enhanced, is undamaged and is a pleasant 'whisky' colour. (Modern citrines come from Brazil and are often colour-enhanced)
The bookmark bears bright-cut engraving which has been skillfully done. It bears the hallmarks for William Henry Leather, Pitsford St., Birmingham and a date mark for 1882.
It is in great condition and extremely tactile.

Length 9cm (3.5 inches)
