Royal-Owned,Victorian,Silver & Cut-Glass Go-To-Bed
A genuine royal antique, this is a superb-quality Victorian accessory, that would enhance any collection. A Victorian Go-to-bed. The outer silver lid and a hinged mount is set a gold or gilt inscribed button surrounded by a band of cabochon corals. This lid lifts to reveal a silver-gilt striker and holder for standing match. This internal lid hinges to reveal the rectangular cut glass base which would contain matches. The glass is cut with a rectangular checquer pattern. London 1865 - William Tween & Frederick Purnell, 4.5x4x3.5 cm. The button to the lid depicts a Royal Crown (which would not be allowed for anybody other than royalty) above the monogram S E. I have not been able to research and members of British Royalty to whom this would apply, so it is likely to have belonged to a member of another European royal family. There are full, legible English silver hallmarks to the hidden part of the mount as follows: Lion (Sterling standard), Leopard's head (London), Gothic k (date letter for 1865, Queen Victoria profile (Duty Mark) as well as sponsors mark WT over FP (William Tween & Frederick Purnell) . There are subsidiary part hallmarks and maker's to the inside of the lid and and the back of the striker.
Excellent condition. The observations below are intended for completeness and transparency. There is nothing material that detracts from aesthetics or function. There are no holes, cuts, splits, losses or major deformation to the silver. There is minor scratching to the glass and some tiny nibbles visible only under powerful loupe and not sensitive to the touch.. All the corals are in place and well-set. There is very little wear to the gilding. There is minor surface scratching to the silver consistent with age. There is a small, but smooth protrusion at the bottom left hand corner of the outer lid - possibly an old repair. One of the subsidiary maker's marks is mis-struck and only the left half is legible. See photos.
I trade in small silver, jewellery and objets d'art. I sell primarily at antiques fairs and in cabinets in Christique Antique Centre in Dorking. I try to find unusual and interesting stock and like to keep turning it over, so I can buy more. Postage and packing are free within the UK - unless explicitly stated otherwise. All fine jewellery will be supplied with a box. If the box/case is described in the text, it will be the one photographed, but may not be if it is not mentioned explicitly. I keep hardly any stock at home, if you want to buy something and need it urgently, I will usually do it the next day, but it may take me some time to respond if you need extra photographs and/or details about the piece that I do not have to hand, as I typically visit the antiques centre just once a week. If you don't see what you're looking for - feel free to send an enquiry via the site. I have only been able to list a portion of my stock.
I will always mention anything that materially affects the aesthetic or function of a piece, but will not attempt to describe what I consider to be normal for age and use. Please use the photographs as well as you can and I’m always happy to answer specific questions.
