Pair Of Victorian Salts & Spoons, J.M. Banks, 1892
This is a very good quality pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Salts with their original matching Salt Spoons. The Salts and Spoons were made in Birmingham by high end silversmith John Millward Banks and date to 1892. John Millward Banks established his business in 1863 and carried on until his death in 1911, when his son took over the business and carried on into the mid-1920s. Banks was known for making fine quality pieces for the table and for personal use. These salts are in a crinkle rim style with flat bottoms and the matching spoons have crinkle rim bowls with barley twist stems. It is increasingly rare to find salts with their original spoons so it's great to have a full set here from the Victorian era.
The Salts and Spoons are in good condition with no dings or dents. They have some salt spotting but apart from that only the minimal amount of wear you would expect from over 125 years of use. They are entirely suitable for use on a dining table today or would make a great addition to any collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The Salts are 4.5cm in diameter and 1.8cm high. The Spoons are each 5cm long. All together the two salts and two spoons weigh in at 21.4g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the sides of the salts are well struck and clear to read. Those on the underside of the spoon bowls are a little rubbed but still easy to decipher. The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the gothic date letter "s" for 1892 and the J.M.B makers' mark for John Millward Banks.
