Pair of George V Silver Candlesticks, J Dixon 1928
Here we have a good quality Pair of George V Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks are in a Neo-Georgian style with octagonal stepped bases, tapered octagonal stems and octagonal urn type sconces. The bases are weighted for stability and covered with green baize to avoid scratching the surface they are sitting on.
The candlesticks were awarded as a (very nice!) prize at an agricultural show and are engraved on two sides of the base of one candlestick with the text: Shepton Mallet Christmas Fat Stocks Show 1929 on one side and Given by J. Farrant, Esq for the four best Beasts, won by A.F. Whitehead, Esq on the opposite side.
The candlesticks are made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Dixon & Sons and date to 1928. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Chrsitopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware
Condition is very good with just a few tiny dings around the bases and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 95 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The candlesticks stand 21cm / 8.27ins high and are 8.5cm / 3.35ins square across the octagonal bases. The pair together weighs in at 756.6g / 26.7oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the sides of the bases, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter l for 1928 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons. They also have the registered design no 450348 stamped on the bases, showing that the design was first registered in 1905.
Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
