Pair Fine Japanese Cloisonne Enamel Vases Meiji
A sensational matched pair of very large antique Japanese cloisonne vases.
Dating the late 19th century (c.1880) - Meiji Era. Excellent quality.
These vases, possibly exhibition pieces, showcase an extraordinarily rich array of cloisonne techniques and enamel types.
Each vase is of sophisticated baluster form, with a series of 13 lobe-shaped panels, each inset with exquisite detail and depicting alternating daytime, twilight and nighttime scenes of butterflies, dragonflies, snails, flowering iris, wisteria and other foliage. Each panel is enclosed and separated by gold 'rope twist' wiring. The overall ground is of dark enamel with wire c-scroll in-fill. The lower and upper margins and trumpet-shaped necks are inset with geometric decoration, alternating lozenge and stylized flower motifs.
Standing some 14 inches tall - very substantial pieces.
Price reflects condition with each vase possessing some faults.
