Imperial Russian Silver Cream Jug, Moscow, 1876
Here we have an attractive 19th century Russian Silver Cream Jug from the reign of Tsar Alexander II. The jug has a round pedestal base, a bulbous body engraved with a triangle, star and key design around a blank circular cartouche, a broad lip and a scroll handle.
The cream jug is made in the Russian 84 Zolotniks silver standard which equates to 875/1000 or 87.5% grade silver.
The cream jug was made in Moscow in 1876 by silversmith Vasilii Ivanovich Ivanov. There is very little information available about Ivanov but he was definitely active between the 1860s and 1880s and possibly either before and/or after that.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The cream jug measures 8.5cm / 3.3ins from lip to handle, 5.5cm / 2.2ins across the body and stands 7.3cm / 2.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 72.3g / 2.5oz of solid silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the 84 stamp for 84 Zolotniks standard (875/1000), the St George & the Dragon assay mark for Moscow, the cyrillic И.К (I.K) assay master mark above the date 1876 and the cyrillic В И (V I) makers' mark for Vasilii Ivanovich Ivanov.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
