Georgian Silver Salt Spoon, Newcastle, c.1793-1837
![](http://images.antiquesatlas.com/b_sold.png)
![](http://staticaz.antiquesatlas.com/images/loading_new.gif)
This is a good quality Georgian Sterling Silver Salt Spoon in the classic Old English pattern. The spoon has a gilded bowl and a crest of a boar's head above a crown engraved at the top of the stem.
The salt spoon was made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne by silversmith Thomas Watson and dates to between 1793 and 1837. Thomas Watson was a specialist spoon and flatware maker who was active in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1793. He operated from premises in The Side, a narrow street running inbetween the Castle and the Cathedral, and remained in business right up until his death in 1845.
The Newcastle assay office frequently didn't use date letters on smaller items of silverware. In addition they used the George III duty mark continuously from 1786 until 1837, even though George III died in 1820. This means that we can only give a date range for this spoon of between 1793 and 1837, rather than a precise year.
Condition is good with no dings or dents, just some thinning of the gilding to the bowl and the engraved crest after many years of polishing plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after around 190 years or more of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt spoon is 10.6cm / 4.2ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.0g / 0.42oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towers assay mark for Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the George III duty mark and the T W makers' mark for Thomas Watson.
