George VI Silver Tea Strainer, E.J. Houlston, 1946 George VI Forties Silver %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
This is a smart George VI Sterling Silver Tea Strainer from immediately after the Second World War. The bowl has a sunburst of pierced holes for the tea drain through a scalloped rim and a roughly triangular handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The tea strainer is made in Birmingham by silversmith E.J. Houlston and dates to 1946. Houlston founded his firm in 1903 but like most Birmingham silversmiths the company was required to convert to war work from 1939 to 1945. The firm re-registered their silver makers' mark in 1945 and remained in business for another 20 years. Silver was still in short supply in Britain in 1946 and items were often made to order with customers bringing in older silver items to be melted down and remade.

Condition is very good with no dings or dents, just a very slight kink in the handle plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 14.2cm / 5.6ins long from rim to handle and 7.7cm / 3ins across the bowl, which is 2cm / 0.79ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 27.4g / 0.97oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter W for 1946 and the E J H in conjoined circles makers' mark for E.J. Houlston.
