George VI Silver Napkin Ring, John Rose, 1937
This is an attractive George VI Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The ring is circular with engraved acanthus leaf decoration around the body to either side of a central blank cartouche and rolled rims to top and bottom.
The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmith John Rose and dates to 1937. John Rose founded his firm at Hockley Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1900. They quickly became successful and produced a wide range of silverware, particularly smoking accessories and tableware. The company remained in business into the late 1970s.
Condition is very good, with just two very small dings in the body, which slightly oddly have been pushed through from the inside and are largely disguised by the acanthus leaf pattern. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The napkin ring is 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter and 2.6cm / 1in deep. It weighs in at 12.9g / 0.45oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the outside of the body, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter N for 1937 and the J R makers' mark for John Rose.
