George VI Silver Christening Cup, Birmingham, 1946
Here we have a very smart George VI Sterling Silver Christening Cup. The cup is in the form of a small tankard with a circular base, a c-shape handle and a rolled top rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind, making this ideal as a Christening gift.
The cup was made in Birmingham by noted silversmiths E.J. Houlston Ltd and dates to 1946. Edwin Joseph Houlston founded his firm in 1903, becoming E.J. Houlston Ltd after his death in 1928. They made a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. Like most Birmingham silversmiths the company was required to convert to war work from 1939 to 1945. The firm re-registered their silver makers' mark in 1945 and remained in business for another 20 years.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 75 years. It doesn't appear to have seen much if any use, primarily being kept as a treasured gift. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The Christening Cup is 8.2cm / 3.2ins from rim to handle, 7cm / 2.7ins in diameter across the base and 8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 89.6g / 3.16oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, just below the top rim, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter W for 1946 and the E J H in conjoined circles makers' mark for E.J. Houlston Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cup.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
