George V Silver Toast Rack, Atkin Bros, 1928
This is a good quality small George V Sterling Silver 4 Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has an oblong base with scalloped sides and high arch dividers. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The toast rack was made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1928. Tracing its roots back to Thomas Law in the mid-18th century, the Atkin family took sole control of the business in 1840, first as Henry Atkin & Co and then from 1853 as Atkin Brothers. The firm manufactured both silverware and electroplate in Sheffield and also had a London showroom. They ceased trading in 1958.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 95 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack measures 6.9cm / 2.7ins by 4.4cm / 1.7ins and stands 7.8cm / 3.1ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 49.2g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of one end bar, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter l for 1928 and the H.A makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
