George V Silver Photo Frame, W.H. Sparrow, 1918
This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Circular Photo Frame. The frame has a plain front which rises to an inner rim around the glass. The visible picture size is 6cm in diameter. The back of the frame is plain wood with a hinged strut.
The photo frame was made by William Henry Sparrow and assayed in London in 1918. William Sparrow established his business in Birmingham in 1903. He made a broad range of primarily small silverware for personal use, much of it aimed at female customers such as compacts, perfume bottles and thimbles as well as photo frames, cigarette cases, vestas and napkin rings. Their mark was registered in Birmingham, London and Chester and the firm remained in business into the mid 1920s.
The frame has a few small dings around the inner rim and a couple on the outer rim but still looks attractive. The hinge on the strut is at a slight angle but it still sits securely on a flat surface. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The frame is 8.7cm / 3.4ins in diameter and weighs 48.4g / 1.7oz.
The hallmarks, at the top of the frame, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter c for 1918 and the W.H.S makers' mark for William Henry Sparrow.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
