George V Silver Pencil Holder, T.H. Vale, 1911
This is a nice George V Sterling Silver Pencil Holder, which comes complete with a 19th century pencil. The pencil holder is a simple flattened cylindrical design with a small loop for attaching to a gentleman's fob chain or lady's chatelaine. The pencil is a perfect fit for the holder.
The silver pencil holder is made in Birmingham by Thomas Henry Vale and dates to 1911. Thomas Vale was in business for a fairly short period of time between 1899 and 1915 and specialised in small silver items for personal use.
The pencil is by A.W. Faber, the forerunner of the famous Faber-Castell pencil company that dates back to 1761 and is still going today. The name changed to Faber-Castell in 1900, so this pencil must be of 19th century date.
These pencil holders were very much working items and this one is no exception. It has clearly had some use and a few dings and dents could probably tell some stories. However it is well made with no splits in the silver and remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pencil holder is 6cm / 2.4" long and without the pencil it weighs in at 3.2g / 0.11oz.
The hallmarks on the side of the holder are small but clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "m" for 1911 and the T.H.V makers' mark for Thomas Henry Vale.
Shipping in the UK is £4 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For.
