George V Silver Mustard Pot, Birmingham, 1916

1 of 6
Here we have a good quality large George V Sterling Silver Mustard Pot with its original blue glass liner. The pot is quatrefoil shaped, stands on four paw feet and there is line decoration on the handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The mustard pot is made in Birmingham by E.S. Barnsley & Co and dates to 1916, in the middle of the First World War. Edward Souter Barnsley founded his firm in Birmingham in 1887 operating from premises in Frederick Street. He made a very broad range of domestic and personal silverware and remained in business into the early 1920s.
Condition is extremely good with no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 105 years of use. The blue glass liner has a small chip at one end but remains perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Although not as large as 18th century examples, the mustard pot is larger than most 20th century ones and measures 9.7cm / 3.8ins from rim to handle, 6.2cm / 2.4ins across and stands 6.6cm / 2.6ins high. The pot by itself weighs in at a substantial 89.9g / 3.2oz of solid Sterling Silver and with the blue glass liner in it weighs 135.5g / 4.8oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the curving body, are somewhat rubbed but still ok to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter r for 1916 and the E.S.B makers' mark for E.S. Barnsley & Co. There is also a partial set inside the lid showing the lion passant and the date letter r. The underside of the body is stamped with the registered design number 571635, which shows that the design was first launched in 1910/11.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the mustard pot.
