George V Silver Mesh Coin Purse, P. Ettlinger 1916 George V Silver Mesh %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Here we have an absolute top quality George V Sterling Silver Two Compartment Mesh Coin Purse. The purse is square with the mesh hanging from a solid frame which has a snap lock closure. It is unusual for these purses to have two compartments, they generally only have one. There is a ring on the frame to enable the purse to be attached to a chain if desired. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coin purse was made in France, imported into England by Paul Ettlinger and assayed in London in 1916. The purse has both the French makers' stamp for Ettlinger & Cie (& Co) and the import sponsors' mark for Paul Ettlinger. Joseph Ettlinger started the business in the late 1800s with retail premises in Regent Street and his son Paul took over around 1900. They sold high quality items for wealthy customers, particularly women, and specialised in importing luxury French goods, many of which were specially made for them in Paris. Although they were also made in England, the French were considered to make by far the best silver mesh purses and evening bags and this would have been a very desirable item for a society lady.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and most importantly no damage to the silver mesh. The snap clasp works well and keeps the contents secure. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The purse measures 6.5cm / 2.5ins square and weighs in at a very respectable 49.9g / 1.7oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks on the frame of the purse and well struck and clear to read. They show the 925 stamp for imported Sterling Silver, the leo astrological sign assay mark for London Imports, the date letter a for 1916 and the P E sponsors' mark for Paul Ettlinger. There are partial sets of hallmarks on the other half of the outer frame, the inner frame and the chain ring. In addition there is the French makers' mark in a lozenge for Ettlinger & Cie and French silver quality marks.

Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the purse.
