George V Silver Inkwell, William Hutton, 1912

Here we have a top quality George V Sterling Silver Inkwell. The inkwell is square with concave sides, a pyramid style lid and four triangular feet that are pointed downwards. There is weighting in the base for stability and a thin black leather cover on the base. It has a new white ceramic liner.
The inkwell is made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1912. Originally established in Birmingham by William Hutton in 1800, the firm moved to Sheffield in 1832 but would later have additional premises in both Birmingham and London. The business passed through several generations of the Hutton family before being taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Although it has clearly been used, condition is very good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the body. The hinge is in good working order and the lid shuts smoothly and flush with the base. It stands securely on a flat surface on the points of its four feet. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 5.9cm / 2.3ins square and stands 5.5cm / 2.2ins high. It weighs in at 181.4g / 6.4oz but this does include the filler in the base.
The hallmarks on one side of the body are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the distinctive W.H.& Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. The inside of the lid is also hallmarked with the lion passant and the date letter n and one side of the body is stamped with the registered design number 551218, which dates the original design to 1910.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
