George V Silver Ink Stand, A&J Zimmerman, 1921
This is a top quality George V Sterling Silver Ink Stand from the early 1920s. The stand was made in Birmingham by A & J Zimmerman and dates to 1921. A & J Zimmerman were important silversmiths in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, operating out of premises in Regent Place from around 1889 to 1929 when they went into liquidation. The Ink Stand is boat shaped, has very clean smooth lines and stands on four legs ending in ball feet. The glass inkwell is made of multiple panels with a round base that fits neatly and securely into the stand and has a hallmarked silver rim and lid.
Condition of the set is overall very good. The stand has no dings or dents and just some very minor wear as you would expect after nearly 100 years. The glass of the inkwell is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. The lid of the inkwell has a very slight ding on the left hand side and some small scuff marks inside. There are no intials or personalisation of any kind. The hallmarks are well struck and very clear to read. Please make sure you view all the photographs.
The inkstand is 23.3cm wide, 10.5cm deep and stands 3.8cm tall at it's highest point. The inkwell is 5.2cm in diameter at its widest point and stands 7.5cm high. The ink stand weighs 185g without the inkwell and together the full set weighs 395g.
The hallmarks on the stand are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "w" for 1921 and the A&J Z makers' mark for A & J Zimmerman. The rim of the inkwell has the lion passant, date letter and makers' mark, whilst the underside of the lid has the lion passant and the date letter. Everything matches so this is clearly a set that was always together.
