George V Silver Gilt Sovereign Case, B'ham, 1913
Here we have a fine quality George V Sterling Silver Gilt Sovereign Case. Unusually, the case is square (the vast majority are circular) and has diagonal engine turned stripes on both sides with a blank circular cartouche on the front. The whole sovereign case is gilded inside and out, making it really stand out.
The sovereign case was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and dates to 1913. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just some slight rubbing to the gilding on the back of the case. The hinge and clasp are both in full working order, as is the spring mounted coin holder. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sovereign case is 4.5cm / 1.77ins from ring to hinge, 2.8cm / 1.1ins square and 1.2cm / 0.47ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 21.0g / 0.74oz of solid Sterling Silver Gilt.
The hallmarks, on the inside of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter o for 1913 and the J.G Ltd makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the sovereign case.
