George V Silver Coronation Salt, London, 1911

Here we have an unusual George V Sterling Silver Table Salt made to commemorate the Coronation of George V in 1911. The salt is a reduced size copy (about one third size) of the famous Innholders' Salt held by the Worshipful Company of Innholders. The original was made in London in 1639 and presented to the Innholders by Richard Reeve, who was Master of the Company in 1648.
The salt is circular with a broad base, a pedestal stem and three raised arms on the upper rim that supported a linen cloth to cover the salt. Around the base is the inscription: This salte was given to the Company of Inhoulders by Mr Richard Reeve whos was Mr of the Company in the year 48 but since deceased Feb 6th 1651. This replica was probably made as a gift from the Innholders Company to special clients to celebrate the King's coronation.
The replica is made in London by silversmith Edward James Scanes and dates to 1911. There is very little information available about Scanes except that he registered his mark in 1909 and seems to have principally made condiment pieces.
Condition is good, with just a slight depression in the upper rim at the base of one of the arms and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after 110 years. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The salt stands 6.1cm / 2.4ins high and is 7.8cm / 3.1ins in diameter. It weighs in at a very substantial 163.2g / 5.75oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter q for 1911 and the E.J.S makers' mark for Edward James Scanes.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the salt.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
