George V Dressing Table Pot, Mappin & Webb, 1911
This is an elegant George V Cut Glass, Sterling Silver and Enamel Dressing Table Pot. The glass body is cylindrical with dogtooth and diamond cut decoration and a flat base. There is a large glass stopper in the top of the pot. The deep screw on lid is Sterling Silver with a gilt interior and a deep blue and white guilloche enamel top. It is a very striking combination.
The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb and dates to 1911, the year of George V's coronation. Originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr, in 1859 the firm split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and no damage to the enamel. There are a few little dings in the deep silver collar but it remains a very attractive piece. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dressing table pot is 7.8cm / 3.1ins high and 4.5cm / 1.8ins in diameter. The silver and enamel lid by itself weighs in at 22.8g / 0.8oz and all together it weighs 159.6g / 5.6oz.
The hallmarks, on the side of the lid, are a little rubbed from polishing but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter m for 1911 and the Mn & Wb makers' mark for Mappin & Webb.
