George V Cat & Fiddle Silver Christening Set, 1926
Here we have a charming cased George V Sterling Silver Christening Set consisting of a spoon and fork with finials showing the cat and the fidlle from the famous nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle or The Cow Jumped Over The Moon. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The set is made by Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol and assayed in London in 1926. As Bristol didn't have an assay office, all of Josiah Williams silver had to be sent to London to be tested and marked. The set is in its original fitted box which is branded for A. Williamson, Jeweller of Rochdale.
The spoon and fork have seen some use and there are a couple of tiny dings and a little wear to the bowl of the spoon. Other than that they are in very good condition. The case The case is a little scuffed on the outside but still looks smart and the hinges and clasp are in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 15.3cm / 6ins long and the fork is 16.2cm / 6.4ins long. The two together, unboxed, weigh in at a very respectable 57.5g / 2oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stems are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter l for 1926 and the D.F makers' mark for David Fullerton, the head of Josiah Williams & Co.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the christening set.
