Here we have a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver and Mother of Pearl Baby's Rattle and Teething Ring. The silver rattle is beautifully modelled as a child's head and shoulders sitting on top of a Corinthian column from which hang four leaf decorated rattle bells. The handle and teething ring are both made of mother of pearl.

The rattle was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Crisford & Norris and dates to 1906. Harold Crisford & William Norris established their business in 1896 at premises in Vyse Street in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. They are best known for their good quality and well designed small items for personal use, novelty baby rattles, pin cushions and stylish powder compacts. They remained in business up until around 1970.

Overall condition is good. There would originally have been six rattle bells but two are now missing and the remaining four are a little dinged as is often the case, however it continues to make a very pleasing sound. The handle and teething ring are securely attached. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The rattle is 13.2cm / 5.2ins from the top of the teething ring to the bottom of the handle, 4.9cm / 1.9ins wide and 2.5cm / 0.98ins deep. It weighs 42.3g / 1.49oz.

The hallmarks,on the front of the rattle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the C & N makers' mark for Crisford & Norris.
